How to Choose Optional Subject for UPSC ?

When it comes to UPSC or State PSC, Optional Subjects are considered as a game-changer because they carried huge weightage. Many candidates were facing issues while choosing Optional subjects. I was also confused about optional and took advice from my seniors and mentors. As I am from a technical background I was advised to take Geography as optional but I don't have such an interest to study geography a lot.

I have analysed all the pros and cons before choosing an optional. I have given myself time to decide what should I opt for. So, I chose 3-4 subjects of my interest and read basic books. Then finally I decided to go for Hindi Literature.

Based on my experience I would like to share some tips to choose Optional Subject for UPSC CSE/ State PSC

  • Think twice before choosing any subject
  • Make a list of subjects that you like to read.
  • Download basic books for those subjects and read them.
  • Analyse which subject you found interesting and might be led you to skip your lunch or dinner.
  • Check whether enough resources are available in the market or not, because sometimes you choose the subject which doesn't have that much resource availability and it will be disastrous for you in long run.
  • Don't go by others perceptions like geography is scoring or Public administration is scoring (Suno sabki karo apne man ki) because in the end your interest matters, you have to read it.
  • If required then join coaching for optional.
  • Purchase or download standard books for your optional and read them carefully.
  • Every day try to write an answer to 2-3 questions (Very much needed).
  • Try to make notes on every topic.
  • Focus on Current affairs related to your optionals.
  • Try to complete optional in 3-4 months and revise it twice before going to appear for exam.
Practice makes man perfect so just practice and get succeed
