Essay Writing Tips

Essay writing is a complicated task for many, on the other hand it is easier for some people.  There are many  key factors involved in writing a good essay and here we will discuss it step by step to become a good essay writer. 

Tips on Writing an Effective Essay

I always follow B I B C approach to write an essay that is

B - Brainstorming and structuring

I -  Introduction

B - Body

C - Conclusion


Step 1: Brainstorming and Structuring

  • First of all, write a topic on a rough page and take 10-15 minutes to  brainstorm.
  • Just think about a topic and note down all the aspects and points related to the topic. Now, structure it in an orderly manner i.e. I B C.


Step 2: Write an Introduction

  • Ideally 10% of your total word limits (120-150 words in case of UPSC CSE).
  • Introduction introduces a topic or you can also define a concept.
  • It can be started with a quote of a known personality  or related story.
  • It is a summary of the topic.
  • It must be broken into paragraphs.


Step 3: Body

  • It is the main part of the essay writing and constitutes  80% weightage.
  • It introduces and elaborates various dimensions related to the topic. For example: Historical dimension, Geographical, Ethical, Environmental, Economical , Socio-cultural etc.,
  • Try to break the body into a number of paragraphs for each dimension.
  • Write a paragraph in sync with the previous paragraph.
  • Linkage of the paragraphs is the most crucial aspect which enables the examiner to read it in one flow.

Step 4: Conclusion

  • It can be an Initiative taken by an NGO or by the government.
  • It can be best practice followed in context of the topic
  • Innovative measure suggested in context of the topic of the essay.
  • It lays down a way forward or progressive measure.
